Inflamatory Bowel Disease
Many times a low grade chronic gut issue in our pet does not get diagnosed as they cannot express a mild tummy ache and we usually do not pick up their poop after every bowel movement. Also what we can think of as a normal stool, may not be. The fact that a Shih Tzu has to be on a sensitive stomach diet so that she does not throw up in the morning or she gets diarrhea under stress indicates a weakened gastrointestinal tract. In all these cases a time bomb is waiting to go off as the very basis of our health is our intestinal tract. A mild inflammation of the gut causes significant health issues over the long term. All our major and micronutrients are processed and absorbed from our gut so an unhappy gut can cause a deficiency of vitamins and minerals.
A thorough case taking usually reveals the major ongoing gut problems but we may need to run specific tests for biomarkers for low grade (and yet to become a problem) intestinal issue.
